Dancing Queens
July 8, 2009
As b. mentioned we were slightly odd kids. We had a pretty easy time keeping ourselves entertained. When the weather was nice, we would wake up early, run outside, and spend the entire day out there until mom called us in for dinner. We’d play witches, which pretty much consisted of us mixing potions (water, mud, sticks, leaves) and riding brooms around the block. Totally normal. You did that too, right? We’d take our Bop! magazines and some snacks and head down to the dump and sit in these big concrete tubes. Or we’d start up a competitive neighborhood game of tag. Freeze tag, tv tag, tunnel tag, regular tag. Whaetvs.
But what to do in winter? Winter…is when we DANCE! (que jazz hands)

Now is the time on Fifty2 Resolutions when we dance!
By following these simple guidelines, you too can cut a rug at home any day of the week!
First, you have to find the right costume. It’s best if it consists of a couple of regular articles of clothing that clash horribly. See my awesomely 80’s flourescent tie in front shirt paired with a boho gingham type skirt. (Actually, there’s a pretty good chance that an Olsen or Sienna Miller wore that yesterday.) These can be combined with components from dance costumes, ie. b.’s pink leotard. From there, add gaudy jewelry and throw that Cabbage Patch Kid on the couch, it’s time to get your groove on.
Next, pick the right music. We were partial to pretty much any track from Thriller, Abba or Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual (we danced our asses off to “She Bop.” We didn’t know what that song was about then. We do now). When we were looking for a slow jam, the obvious choices were Air Supply or the spectacular compilation cassette, Love is…, which I’m pretty sure has been mentioned here at Fifty2 before, but as a reminder, it contains the power ballads, “Never Been to Me,” “Almost Paradise” and “You Can Do Magic,” along with other top notch hits few people remember.
Now, let’s dance! Sometimes we’d freestyle, but most of the time there was choreography. And being the older, and cooler sister, I usually took on the role of choreographer. Often times we’d have friends over and split into two groups. Go off and make up dances, perform for each other, then do it again. I’m not sure if our friends were really into it or not. I kinda don’t think they really were, but they didn’t have much of a choice. It’s what the sisters Housley did. Because the dance, it was in our blood. Or something. (insert dramatic spin.)

“She’s So Unusual” is, was, and always shall be a classic. I think I wore out my cassette from listening to it so much.
As for power ballads, rock on! For some reason whenever those 30 minute infomercials for 80s music, 90’s music, or power ballads comes on I cannot change the channel.
